"I was awarded the national prize as Standard Bank Young Artist of theYear in 2002. This afforded me the opportunity to create a new body of work that would travel the country from museum to museum for a year.
With these works I attempted to define an often-discombobulated sense of identity, post-94, the year of the first free and fair elections.
The works on the show were mostly flat metal and plastic wall sculptures which take, as their starting point, sampled single-frame cartoons from old‘New Yorker’, ‘Spectator’ and ‘Punch’ magazines. By inventing new texts I hoped to articulate my own ironic take on the South African social landscape.
The comic and the tragic seem to walk hand in hand in this sad and hilarious country. In the works a patriotic limbo-land is described where the cultural disjunctures are intended to provoke."
