1987-1989

Cape Town, South Africa

After the Rivonia Trial, Govan Mbeki was imprisoned (1963–1987) on charges of terrorism and treason, together with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Raymond Mhlaba, Ahmed Kathrada and other eminent ANC leaders, for their role in the ANC's armed wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK)
The "Govan Mbeki Welcoming Committee" was a group formed by supporters of the African National Congress (ANC) to welcome him when he was released from Robben Island prison in 1987.
The committee approached us to design and produce large celebratory street posters.
In 1989 hundreds of State of Emergency detainees across the country engaged in hunger strikes to demand their release.
We responded by producing a large mural that we pasted on a wall in the city centre of Cape Town.
