In the 1980s South Africa saw significant worker strikes as part of a broader wave of industrial unrest and political resistance against apartheid. The Congress Of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) asked us to print armbands for nurses to wear in order to identify them as essential workers during these strikes.
In 1985, nearly 1,000 SARMCOL workers in Mpophomeni South Africa struck for union recognition. BTR’s mass dismissals sparked a violent, years-long dispute, including the 1986 murder of four by Inkatha vigilantes. Supported by COSATU and global unions, the strike ended with a 1998 court ruling against BTR, marking a key anti-apartheid labour struggle. We printed t-shirts and posters for the striking workers cultural group.
We assisted COSATU in producing two annual worker diaries.
The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) was established in South Africa in 1986 through the amalgamation of the Food and Canning Workers' Union, the Sweet, Food and Allied Workers' Union, and the Retail and Allied Workers' Union.
